Promoting Regular Exercise Is The Key To Battling Obesityss

In our computerised world, more and more of us are becoming sedentary. In the UK, this is causing huge problems for our health as a nation.

Statistics published by the Government earlier this year, covering research from the last 20 years or so, highlight a growing problem with obesity, diet, and physical exercise in the UK.

A whopping 57% of respondents admitted to not doing any physical exercise in the 28 days prior to be surveyed. Only 36% of those surveyed said that they participate in sport at least once a week. The number of people who are clinically obese has risen from 15% in 1993 to 26% 2014, and morbid obesity numbers have tripled in that same period. Being overweight contributes to a whole host of health risks, including high blood pressure and diabetes which can, at best, lower your quality of life and, at worst, cause premature death.

Treating patients with obesity related illnesses is also putting strain on health services worldwide. In 2014, 519 thousand items were prescribed to patients with obesity related illnesses, and year on year more patients are admitted to hospital with weight related issues.

So what can be done?

Really, the only way to tackle the problem the UK is facing is by promoting healthier lifestyles, including exercise. This is a view point that professors at the University of Florida have recently come out in support of. Their editorial published earlier this year in Cardiology, outlines how physical exercise could be a ‘magic bullet’ to help cure the worldwide obesity pandemic.

The report recommends even just a brisk walk for 20 minutes each day. Doing this burns approximately 700 calories a week, can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, and can be carried out by just about anyone – from the very young to the very old.

While it’s easy to think about exercise theoretically rather than practically, it’s important to know that exercise is achievable in your day to day routine. The key is to find a form of exercise that you enjoy doing. Problems arise when you’re plugging away t something you don’t enjoy, as then your motivation to do it day after day will quickly disappear. Finding the perfect activity for you might take some trial and error, but whether it’s sport, going to the gym, dancing, swimming, or something else entirely – there’s bound to be something out there for you.

And, if your busy lifestyle and 9 to 5 job means you find it hard to squeeze in the recommended level of exercise each day, you could even invest in some office equipment that will keep you active while you work!
