Why Office Workers Need To Exercisess
The growing level of inactivity in Britain is leading to more health problems, more fatigue and less job satisfaction. A controversial study published earlier this year suggested that office work could be as bad for us as smoking. It stated that sitting at a desk for eight hours a day could increase your risk of premature death by up to 60% from a host of diseases including heart disease and cancer.
What’s the solution?
Simply put, more exercise is the answer.
An hour of exercise a day is recommended for office workers in order to keep them in shape and out of the health red zone. And, while some people have reacted negatively to this suggestion, it should be noted that the study doesn’t state the exercise has to be done in one go. Instead, office workers are advised to take a five-minute break every hour, and squeeze in some extra time after their shift has ended. This way, the hour’s exercise seems a lot less daunting!
How can you do it?
Here are some of our top tips for fitting in that much needed exercise:
- Walk to your favourite coffee shop
Just walking down the road to your favourite shop a couple of times a day can help you get in the recommended amount of exercise, just make sure you don’t buy a calorific drink and a slice of cake while you’re there!
- Go up and down the stairs
If you work in an office block with a lot of stairs, why not carve out five minutes every hour or so to walk up and down a couple of times?
- Get your co-workers involved
Sometimes exercise doesn’t feel as laborious if you have a partner in crime, or ten partners in crime! Why not start up an office initiative to get everyone on their feet throughout the day?
- Invest in active equipment
More of us are working from home these days, and the comfort of your own office is the perfect place to put in a desk treadmill or an active seat – so you can get in your daily dose in while cracking on with your work.
